Abortions
"Abortion." Current Issues: Macmillan Social Science Library. Detroit: Gale,
2010. Gale.
Opposing
Viewpoints In context. Web. 24 Sep. 2012.
In summary of "Abortion" from Gale Cengage database, there are a variety of different issues that cause abortions to be so controversial including medical, ethical, and social issues. Medically, the debate lies around the "safety of
the procedure." Infection is a profound and usual medical problem related to abortions. Another concern is harm done to the uterus due to the medical procedure. Ethically, the debate is centered around the issue of whether or not the fetus is a person who has rights, and if so, at what point in the pregnancy. Does the fetus' right to live outweigh the mother's choice of having
an abortion? Socially, issues concerning abortions include its fingerprints on society and the "ideas of social justice and equality".
This source is very useful for basic information on the main issues centered around abortions. It gives examples of the main issues--medical, social, and ethical. The information is also reliable because it doesn't throw out crazy statistics, rather just states facts. The source was not biased towards pro-choice or pro-life but gave information concerning both sides. The goal of this article was to present the facts and main issues that cause abortions in the United States to be so controversial.
This source was a good starting point in my research. It gave basic issues concerning abortions and the viewpoints of both sides concerning the issues. It was helpful because it gave me some leverage when I am going to need to defend myself in my paper. The article stated, "Unborn children have the right to inherit property, and if an unborn child is wrongfully killed, the person at fault can be charged with manslaughter." I need to do more research on this statement because it could really help me when defending how wrong abortion is.
"Abortion: Late-Term/Partial-Birth." Current Issues: Macmillan Social Science Library. Detroit: Gale, 2010. Gale Opposing Viewpoints In Context. Web. 6 Oct. 2012.
In summary of "Abortion: Late-Term/Partial-Birth," the background and history of late-term births were discussed. Also, in 2003, a ban was placed on partial-birth abortions. Three lawsuits followed this ban, trying to declare the ban unconstitutional but in 2007, it was declared constitutional. This ban was a huge milestone for anti-abortionists because it was a beginning to the hopeful end of abortions. However, pro-abortionists saw this as a threat to women's rights. Since the partial-birth ban, violence and intimidation has increased from pro-lifers.
The information from this source is reliable. It is not biased because it presents the issues and viewpoints of both sides, pro-life and pro-choice. It discusses the issues that the partial-birth abortion ban has caused on both sides.
I would use this source for in my paper. I could discuss how partial birth abortions are a type of abortion, in the third trimester and discuss it's ban. I could use this source to talk about how pro-life advocates have made bad choices by using intimidation and violence to persuade women from getting abortions, as a result of this ban. But I could also use this source to discuss
how the ban was the first step in abolishing all abortions.
"Abortion: Mandatory Ultrasounds." Issues & Controversies. Facts On File News Services, 7 May 2012. Web. 30 Sept. 2012.
In summary of "Abortion: Mandatory Ultrasound" from Facts on File News Services, some states have made it mandatory for women to receive an ultrasound prior to getting an abortion. People who support the requirements defend that doing so will protect the woman's pschologically and physically. This is because the exact age of the fetus could be determined, ensuring that the pregnancy is not to far along to conduct the abortion safetly. Also, by showing the woman the fetus, it gives her a chance to connect with the baby, possibly detouring her decision to follow through with the procedure. However, people who are against the ultrasound laws say that it is manipulative and inappropriate. They argue that the women are put through more pychological harm from the ultrasound than without it.
This article is useful because it gives a good argument for both sides of the issue concerning ultrasound requirements prior to an abortion. The information in it is valid, like the other articles I've read, it does a god job of being objective rather than biased. This source doesn't pick a side and only defend it but rather gives the supporter's views as well as the opponent's.
This would be a helpful source to use in my research paper. I could use this to defend my opinion of why women should receive an ultrasound before getting an abortion. It is the logical step before any surgical procedure, so it only makes sense to do it before an abortion as well in order to be fully informed. It could help the woman understand that what is inside of her is more than a "fetus" it is a baby, with a heartbeat, growing every second.
"Abortion: Parental Consent." Current Issues: macmillan Social Science Library. Detroit: Gale, 2010. Gale Opposing Viewpoints In Context. Web. 24 Sep. 2012.
In summary of "Abortion: Parental Consent" from Gale Cengage Learning, debates on whether or not minors should be able to obtain an abortion without parental consent are becoming more controversial. The purpose of laws requiring parental consent are to prevent girls from being sexually active or choosing an abortion, and to protect "parent-child relationships." However, the laws are driving young people out of their states to find states that do not require parental involvement in order to terminate the pregnancy. Health care professionals as well as some government officials feel as if such laws need to be banned because they are causing young people to make poor decisions such as harming themselves in order to abort the baby.
This source was useful because it gave me a perspective on how pro-choice and pro-life advocates view parental consent laws. The article was not biased because it didn't side with one way or the other, but rather told both points
of view. The information from this source is reliable because it does not give outrageous statistics that can't be proven, but uses credible people to defend it's points.
This article would be good to use in my paper if I need to reference the effects that parents have on abortions. Realistically, parents have very little involvement. If the state in which the minor lives in has a law in which the parent must give consent, they just leave and go to another state for the abortion. Or, the teens take matters into their own hands and terminate the pregnancy by inflicting harm onto themselves. This source did kind of change my perspective on things. I am pro-life, anti-abortion, however you want to say it. But are more laws preventing minors from getting abortions really going to stop them from aborting the baby or just stop it legally? I think the emphasis needs to not be on parent consent and abortions as much as parent consent with contraceptive availability to prevent abortions all together.
"Abortion: When Does Human Life Begin?" Issues & Controversies On File: n. pag. Issues & Controversies. Facts On File News Services, 22 Aug. 2005. Web. 30 Sept. 2012.
In summary of "Abortion: When Does Human Life Begin?" from Facts On File News Services, pro-life and pro-choice advocates both have different opinions regarding when human life begins while in the womb. According to pro-life advocates, life begins at the time of contreception. However, pro-choice advocates believe that the fetus is not a human until it can survive on it's own outside of the mother's womb.
This source is useful because it gives a clear presentation of both sides regarding when human life begins. This article gives examples and explanations from both points of view to help the reader pick a side. The information in this source is reliable because it is objective rather than biased. There are multiple charts and graphs throught the article which gives accurate
information regarding the topic. The goal of this source is to present both sides of the argument of when human life begins.
This article is helpful and I would probably use it in my research paper. I could use it when I wanted to defend how abortion was wrong because life begins at contreception. A human has 46 chromosomes, and so does a fetus, thus making it a human. The fetus has a heartbeat, brain activity, cell function and growth. This article hasn't changed my perspective on abortions, it has only strengthened why I believe they are wrong.
Ertelt, Steven. "Mayo Clinic Doctor Admits Abortions Hurt Women, Cause Premature Births." LifeNews.com. N.p. 20 Aug. 2009. Web. 8 Oct. 2012.
The article was about how a mayo doctor by the name of Roger W. Harms wrote a factsheet on how abortions lead to premature births in pregnacies to follow abortions. Due to the vacuum, spoon, or other instruments used during the surgical procedure of removing the fetus, the cervix and uterus are often damaged. Due to a damaged cervix, premature births are more likely. Studies also show that premature babies have twice the chance of developing cerebral palsy than a baby born at full-term.
This article is biased against abortions. The point of this article was to show the consequences women face when they have an abortion in later pregnancies. In my opinion, this article is reliable since the studies were conducted by a physician from Mayo Clinic, not just an average joe guy trying to get his two cents in.
I would definitely use this article in my research paper. I will use it when I discuss the aftermath of an abortion. Once women perform the abortion, they think that the problem is gone. However, that is not the case. Other articles I have read discuss the depression and psychological affects of an abortion and the toll that has on the women. This article describes physical problems women can face after they have had an abortion.
"Fetal Homicide Laws." Issues & Controversies On File: n. pag. Issues & Controversies. Facts On File News Services, 25 June 2004. Web. 30 Sept. 2012.
In summary of "Fetal Homicide Laws" from Facts On File News Services, the controversy concerning whether or not it should be considered homicide when a fetus is murdered due to a tragic accident or crime. People who support this law, say that there are two lives, the mother and the unborn child, who should receive justice. People who do not support this law state that the mother is the only victom because she is the only viable person. The issue in this debate is if it is considered homicide when a crime is commited, why isn't it considered murder when an abortion takes place?
This article is useful because it gives two sides to the argument of whether or not it should be considered homicide when a fetus is killed due to crime. The source's information is objective and not biased. This goal of this article is to present both sides of the argument concerning the topic. This article relates to one of the other annotations, "Abortion," because it gives explanation as to why people consider a crime to be homicide when occuring to a fetus, but not abortion.
This article is helpful because it gives me more information concerning how fetus' are considered to be a part of a homicide when murdered by a criminal but not during an abortion. This will give me more things to disagree with and argue about in my paper. How is it logical for one case to be wrong but not the other? They both result in a dead baby, what is the difference? This article has not changed my perspective on the fact that abortions are a form of homicide, and are not okay.
"History of Abortion." National Abortion Federation. National Abortion Federation, 2010. Web. 8 Oct. 2012.
In summary of "History of Abortion," this article was all about where abortion was and where it is now. Abortions have been practiced for thousands of years. In the United States, they became illegal around 1820, during the "quickening". During this time, women still had abortions, they were just extremely dangerous and usually resulted in death for both the fetus and the mother. By outlawing abortions, abortion rates did not decrease. Illegal abortions could reach a stagering "1.2 million per year" despite the laws forbidding them. In the 20th century, one-third of states legalized abortions. Abortions did not become legal in all states until the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court case in 1973. Since then, laws such as the ban on partial birth abortions have been implamented.
This article is somewhat bias because it comes from a pro-choice website. This website is geared and focused on women's rights and their right to choose. Therefore, it may leave out some information or add information in order to juice up their case. However, it did provide a lot of information such as dates and what occured during those dates in order to get a better understanding of the history of abortions.
I would use this article in my research paper. I could use this source in order to explain why some people feel as if legalized abortions do more good than harm since when they were illegal, thousands of women would harm themselves in attempts to abort the baby. I could also use this source in my introduction and discuss the timeline of how abortions used to be, how they are now, and what factors got them to this point. This article has not changed my personal views on abortion, but it helps me get a better understanding of why some people do support them.
Lloyd, Delia. "Abortion Safer Than Childbirth, British Doctors' Group Wants Women to Know." Politics Daily. AOL Inc, 2011. Web. 14 Oct 2012.
In summary of this article, it discussed how British doctors feel as if it should be mandatory to tell all expecting women that an abortion would be safer than childbirth. Many people such as Christians are outraged about telling women this at their most vulnerable time. Gynecologists used to have to tell women of psychological illnesses post abortion. Now however, it is a new
requirement to also tell women the dangers of childbirth as well.
This article isn't completely reliable. It is written by a journalist writing about a current event in Britain. The goal of this article was to share how doctors are not only required to share the dangers of abortion to women who wish to obtain them, but also share the dangers of childbirth. The article wasn't really biased toward being for or against doctors doing this because it shares both sides. It does lean somewhat more towards not telling women the dangers of childbirth, though.
I don't know if I would use this article in my research paper. It isn't really like any other articles I have looked at. If I were to use it though, I would probably use it to share how abortions are becoming more and more common in other countries as well as America. It has gone from warning women of the dangers of abortion in order to hopefully talk them out of getting it, to telling women the dangers of childbirth in order for the woman to have an "educated" choice of whether or not to obtain an abortion or go through with having the baby. But I could counteract this article with another article that I read that discussed how abortions are not necessarily safe for women because it affects their later pregnancies by increasing the risk of premature
births.
Neergaard, Lauran. "Study: Free Birth Control Leads to Fewer Abortions." ABC news. ABC news, 5 Oct. 2012. Web. 8 Oct. 2012.
This article was about how if birth control was offered to women in the United States for free, than the rates of teen pregnancies and abortions would decrease. They performed a study in St. Louis to demonstrate this concept. The teen pregnancy rates went from about 34 births to 1,000 teens in 2010 to around 6.3 births per teenager. Similarly, the abortion rates decreased phenomonoly. The rates when from around 13.4 to 17 abortions per 1,000 women to only 4.4 to 7.5 abortions. The controversy now is whether or not free contraceptives should be provided nation wide.
This article is not biased. It's goal is to present the knowledge that if women were able to have free birth control, then abortion rates would decrease. This information is reliable because it came from ABC news, which is a very reliable news source.
I would use this article in my research paper. It doesn't give much information about abortions, but I could use it in order to explain ways to fix the increasing number of abortions in the United States. A controversy now is whether or not some women use abortions as their birth control. If free birth control was provided, then the percentages of abortions would decrease by a
lot. However, the issue with this concept is that the government would be paying for all of the medicine, therefore taxes would probably increase. In the article it stated that mostly poor women were the ones who flocked to have this free birth control. If this is the case all over America, than the hard-working middle class would probably end up supporting prostitutes to receive their birth control.
"Pregnancy Week by Week." Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood Federation of America, 2012. Web. 13 Oct 2012.
In summary of this article, it gave a description of what occurs during each week of pregnancy. It described what physical changes the baby goes through week by week as well as what changes the mother's body goes through. It gives a list of symptoms the mother is going to experience in relation to that week of pregnancy and what the baby has developed during that week.
This article is reliable. It was written by Planned Parenthood for women who are pregnant and are curious as to what is happening during their pregnancy. This article isn't biased, it just presents informations pertaining to what occurs during pregnancy to both the baby and the mother.
I could use this article in my paper. It doesn't really relate to any of my other articles because it describes what happens during pregnancy rather than abortion. But I could use this information to defend how there is life during pregnancy. I could also use it to show how if a woman decides to have an abortion at whatever point during her pregnancy, like one of the articles talked about the different procedures at different points in pregnancy, I could
use this article to describe what the baby is like and how developed it really
is at that point.
"Public Opinion on Abortion (sidebar)." Issues & Controversies On File: n. pag. Issues & Controversies. Facts On File News Services, 8 Dec. 1995. Web. 1 Oct. 2012.
In summary of the "Public Opinion on Abortion," Americans tend to have differing opinions concerning abortions. When asked the general question of whether or not abortions should be legal, the majority of Americans responded with no. However, when asked a series of other questions concerning the cause of impregnation, the health of the baby, and the health of the mother, the majority of American's opinions were in favor of legal abortions in these cases. When asked if it should be legalized due to selfish desires of the mother, the majority were not in favor of legalized abortions.
This sidebar concerning the public's opinion was a reliable source. It shows the proof of how American's will change their views on abortion based on the circumstance. The information in this source is not biased toward or against abortion, rather gives the opinions of what Americans who were surveyed said concerning the topic.
This source would be something I could use in my research paper. It prooves that abortions are more circumstantial than a matter of morals. The source stated that only "7% of people feel as if abortions should be illegal in all circumstances." In my paper, I could state how abortions, which are supposively huge moral issues, really are just a circumstantial issue. As long as the woman doesn't want to go throught witht the abortion merely because she doesn't want the baby, society is okay with it.
Reardon, David. "Psychological Reactions Reported After Abortion." Abortion Facts. Elliot Institute, 1994. Web. 6 Oct. 2012.
In summary of "Psychological Reactions Reported After Abortion," it was a survey of women who have had an abortion and the after math of it. It asked questions that gave proof that women who had an abortion in their teen years were more likely to experience extremely negative psychological reactions. The survey also showed that women who had an abortion in their teen years were more likely to have had a rough home life and poor relations towards men.
This source is not biased, since it is a survey, but it isn't completely reliable either. It compares to a few of the other articles, as far as being a survey. If the women answered honestly in this survey, than it would be a very reliable source to use since it came from Elliot Institute.
I would use this information in my research paper. It presents that a lot of women have psychological issues post abortion. I could use the statistics and information from this source in my paper to defend my points on why not to receive an abortion because it causes more harm to the mother than good.
Scheidler, Ann. "Special Interview: Ann Scheidler Speaks out Against Abortion." Issues & Controversies. Facts On
File News Services, 9 Aug. 2002. Web. 1 Oct. 2012.
In the interview between Issues & Controversies On File and Ann Scheidler, Sheidler defended her beliefs regarding
abortions. Sheidler is a conservative, pro-life advocate who was asked a myriad of tough questions. The questions involved
controversial topics concerning partial birth abortions, themorning after pill, the abortion pill, the withdrawl of funding towards
the International Monetary Fund, and ammending the constitution to insure that abortions are illegal.
This source is biased. Since it is an interview, it is soley one person's opinions. It is all from the view point and beliefs of a pro-
life advocate. It is completely different from the "Public Opinion" source because this source focuses on the morals of abortion
rather than the circumstances.
I would definitely use this in my paper! Although it is biased, it is my bias as well so I could use it when I am trying to defend
different points throughout my paper. It touches on very important topics as mentioned in the summary and Scheidler was
able to defend her points with, what seems to be, logical facts.
"Types of Abortion Procedures." American Pregnancy Association. American Pregnancy Association, 2012. Web. 6 Oct. 2012.
In summary of "Types of Abortion Procedures," it gave a variety of different procedures offered at all different stages of pregnancy. The variety of abortions range from pills to surgical procedures. During the first trimester of pregnancy, there are the most choices and ways to obtain an abortion. As the pregnancy progresses, there are fewer ways to obtain an abortion, but still possible.
This source was not biased at all. It presented the different types of abortions and the time frame they can be performed in. It also described the procedure performed. It gave reliable and factual information.
I would use this source in my paper. I could use it when I first present the different types of abortions and the time frames when they are performed. I could use it to describe the procedures in my paper in order to give the reader a more educated approach to abortions before I begin defending my side.
In summary of "Abortion" from Gale Cengage database, there are a variety of different issues that cause abortions to be so controversial including medical, ethical, and social issues. Medically, the debate lies around the "safety of
